Theology for Librarians: Exegetical Paper and Resources

Best Commentaries for Exegetical Work

What Exegetical Means and Where to go for Help

Exegesis is merely the interpretation of specific text: an explanation or interpretation of a specific text, especially a religious one.

The five basic steps in exegesis are: 1) textual/translation, 2) literary context, 3) historical context, 4) theological communication, and 5) application

Essentially all you're doing is directing students to an appropriate resource. The three commentary sets to the left are the best for finding answers to each of the questions demanded of exegesis. But there are more texts as well. In the B section of the stacks there is a section right in the middle which starts with Genesis (Apporx BS1235)and goes straight through to Revelation (approx BS2825). Books dealing with each book of the Bible are grouped together in the order they appear in the Bible. All a student has to do is head to the middle of the section find a section on any Bible book and go either right or left in search of the one they need.

Most importantly there is a LibGuide now totally devoted to a step by step examination of the exegetical process and the resources necessary to complete the work. It is the Exegetical Papers Libguide
