Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library is hosting the Southern premiere of the travelling exhibit Bandits & Heroes, Poets & Saints – Popular Art of the Northeast of Brazil. It will be on display September 7, 2014 - May 18, 2015. The exhibit features 56 paintings, prints, wood carvings, and photographs by 21 popular artists from Northeast Brazil. This artwork reflects the interaction of European, African, and indigenous cultural traditions that form the distinctive culture of this fascinating area of Brazil. Topics highlighted in the exhibit are slavery in Brazil, the plantation economy, the popular heroes and heroic acts of resistance, the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomble, and the martial arts and stylized dance of capoeira. This travelling exhibit is on loan from the arts organization Con/Vida – Popular Arts of the Americas.
