How to prepare for your research session

            

  • Be mindful of the questions you have about your assignment or research project.

  • Be prepared to discuss your assignment with your Research Coach.

  • Bring your assignment description, course syllabus, and any work you have done so far.

  • If you're just getting started, no problem. The Research Coach can help.

When should I see my Research Coach?
You should see your a Research Coach when you have a research paper or assignment for class and need assistance with it. After identifying you need some help, most times it is best to visit earlier than later. Whenever you do choose to see a Research Coach, coming prepared for an appointment will help you get the most out of your meeting.
 
How can my Research Coach help me?
Your Research Coach can assist you with selecting a topic, narrowing or broadening a topic, creating a thesis or research question, navigating library databases and the Libraries web page as well as learning the skills to find and evaluate articles that are scholarly and peer-reviewed.
 
What things can I do to prepare for my appointment?

One of the best ways to prepare for your appointment is learning what your assignment includes and what your instructor is expecting. Depending at what stage of the research process you are at, coming with ideas regarding what interests you and next steps can be helpful.

What do I need to bring with me?
It is best to bring your course syllabus and any information on the assignment you are looking for assistance with. Bringing previous work you have done for the project is also helpful.
 
What will I be doing during my appointment
The Research Coach will want to read and hear about your assignment and where you are in the process. Then depending on what you are looking for assistance with, the Research Coach will work with you to brainstorm ideas, show what resources the Library has to offer, or demonstrate ways to navigate databases effectively and efficiently. Meeting with your Research Coach is very relaxed and up to you with what you want to cover and talk about.
