OpenAI’s premier conversational chatbot, which can write and debug computer programs, compose music, write expository essays, translate and summarize text, generate course syllabi, and even draft business deals.
This one lacks knowledge of recent events, and therefore is not conducive to looking up current news.
Other limitations include algorithmic bias, inaccuracies, and hallucination (writing plausible-sounding but erroneous, nonsensical responses).
Tiered: Free, Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise. See https://openai.com/chatgpt/pricing/ for specifics.
Developed by Anthropic, Claude.ai can summarize documents, generate long-form text, build data visualizations, translate languages, and program code.
Its developer adheres to a code of ethical norms, called the Constitutional AI philosophy, while avoiding algorithmic bias.
Separate tiers offered: Individual and Team & Enterprise. See https://claude.ai/login?returnTo=%2F%3F#pricing for details.

This one generally provides comprehensive scholarly literature search. It also maps citations to present a visual representation of who’s citing who, as well as aid in rapid literature review. It identifies publication trends and gaps that can inform collection development.
This platform does have a steep learning curve and, therefore, would require some training on its use. There are freely available demos and tutorials on the web.
AUC Woodruff Library has a subscription to this platform.
Its formal name Google NotebookLM, this is a note-taking and research tool that facilitates user-document interaction. It generates summaries and explanations based on the uploaded content. A noted feature is its “Audio Overviews,” which summarizes documents and video (transcript required) in a conversational, podcast-like format.
Free and Pro plans are available. See https://notebooklm.google/plans for information. Depending on the user's need, there are also plan upgrades available: Consumer, Business, Enterprise, and Education.
There are limits imposed in the free plan: a max of 100 Notebooks, with up to 50 sources each and 500,000 words each; daily limits of 50 chat queries and 3 audio overviews. (See the Q&A.) To be able to exceed those limits, one would have to upgrade to a higher-tiered plan.
