The African Diaspora and the World (ADW) Program at Spelman College is designed to center the experiences and contributions of people of African descent. This interdisciplinary program offers students the opportunity to explore their identity, history, and place within the global African Diaspora.
A key component of the ADW Program is the required two-semester course sequence, ADW 111 and ADW 112, taken during students' first year at Spelman. These courses are specifically tailored to the experiences of Black women, offering a deep dive into their historical, cultural, and social realities. Through the curriculum, students engage in critical inquiry that helps them understand their personal histories and their roles in the broader African Diaspora.
The ADW Program encourages self-reflection, intellectual growth, and empowerment, providing students with the tools to navigate their identity in a global context. By studying African history, culture, and contemporary issues, students develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world and gain the knowledge to become change agents in their communities and beyond.
