Philosophy: Medieval: General Reference

Medieval Philosophy

“Medieval philosophy” has changed its meaning among specialists over the last twenty years. The change is not in chronology, where views remain divided: most agree that the period stretches at least from 500–1500, but some push the starting point back and/or the end point forward.

Rather, the change is about geography, and so language and culture. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, medieval philosophy was regarded as having taken place in Western Europe, mostly in Latin, with Paris and Oxford as its greatest centers. Islamic and Jewish thinkers writing in Arabic were included only in so far as their works were translated into Latin and influenced Christian thinkers. Nowadays, however, “medieval philosophy” is coming to be regarded as including not just the work of Christians writing in Latin (and sometimes in the European vernaculars), but of Christians in the Byzantine Empire writing in Greek, Muslims (and some Christians) writing in Arabic, and Jews in the Islamicate world writing in Arabic and in Christendom writing in Hebrew.

The items in this section are intended to help the researcher find useful information on ancient philosophy. Items designated "reference works" usually are not expected to contain material of such depth and subtlety that they would be of use only to experts in the field; rather, they are meant to provide information of general import (dates, definitions, overviews) for those who may just be starting out in their studies, for those who simply need refreshers and summations, or for those trying to win a bet. Some reference works, however, provide more in-depth coverage than others. Remember that reference sources are often a good starting-point for research because the bibliographies at the end of each entry (in the case of large encyclopedias) or the entire resource will direct you to valuable primary and secondary material.
