Interlibrary Loan: Reasons for Cancellation

This guide is an overview of the interlibrary loan service.

Why has my request been cancelled? Common reasons are explained below.

Interlibrary loan’s Reason for Cancellation

Explanation

On shelf & available for check-out – RWWL Main Collection

The requested item is on the shelves in Woodruff Library. Staff always verifies that the material is available before cancelling your request.

We have exhausted all possible sources.

Although some libraries report owning the requested item, none of these libraries could or would supply the item. There are no other library sources from which we can obtain the item.

Not found as cited

We cannot identify the publication you requested. If it is a book, you may have the wrong author or title. If it is a journal article, you may have the wrong journal title, incorrect volume number, year, or pages. Check your source for the accurate information.

Too New for an Interlibrary Loan

Most libraries will not lend recently published books. Items published very recently may not yet be available in a library willing to lend the item.

This Item is Non-Circulating

The library that owns this item will not lend it. If you only need copies of a few pages from the item, you should resubmit your request as a photocopy request for those few pages.

RWWL Account Blocked

Library policy does not allow you to borrow materials from other libraries if your account at your home institution is not in good standing. You will need to contact the Circulation Dept. to find out what is required to have the block removed.

Full-text available – RWWL E-journals

The requested item is available in an electronic journal accessible through the library’s website. The name of the database in which the article appears will be included in the email.

Full-text on the Web

The requested item is freely available on the Internet. The Web address for the title you requested is included in the email from the interlibrary loan unit.

Current Textbook

We do not accept requests for current editions of textbooks because the typical ILL loan period (about 4 weeks) does not enable you to borrow the book for an entire semester. In addition, textbooks are usually on reserve for a class or already checked out. Some libraries even have policies against textbook loans.

Ineligible

You are not a currently enrolled student, faculty or staff member of an AUC school. If this information is incorrect you will need to bring proof of your current status to the Circulation Desk.

Unable to Borrow Dissertation

Usually the only copy of any particular dissertation or thesis is located at the school where the author wrote the work. Many schools will not lend dissertations and some will not lend theses.
