overview

Chemistry and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors interested in the interface between materials chemistry and data science participate in a 9-week research experience for undergraduates (REU) program hosted by Clark Atlanta University and Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative. Participants gain broad perspectives by participating in an interdisciplinary research environment while working with a faculty mentor at the chemistry department.

To support the professional development component of the REU program, this research guide serves as a companion resource. It provides the students with an overview of some of the tools and resources that may help them progress in their careers. During this part of their REU program, students will learn:

  • Benefits of scholarly publishing, making science open, and sharing research data
  • Tools and best practices for giving presentations
  • How to create, post, and maintain an online researcher profile
  • Ways to promote skills and accomplishments in a resume, curriculum vita, or a digital portfolio

Given the multitude of professional development tools and resources that are out there, the selections that are included in this research guide are not exhaustive. Content would also be updated, added or removed as needed.
