Collection Development: Subject Profile

I. Programs Supported

Education resources, purchased for the RWWL collection, must strongly support two Clark Atlanta and Spelman College curricula. With the schools’ commitment to professional leadership development and to the preparation of leaders as change agents in a multicultural society, the RWWL’s education collection must be broadly qualitative and comprehensive with the inclusion of historical and current materials in print and electronic formats. The collection must further focus on professional syllabi from the education faculty members in preparation for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) accrediting visitations. These accreditation visitations are scheduled during the fall and spring semesters of an academic year. The undergraduate program at Spelman and the undergraduate and graduate programs at CAU, while somewhat unique, have a commonality: creating multicultural educators. The collection must finally cover education foundations (Old World, e.g. Greco-Roman, Medieval, Renaissance and Reformation and America, e.g. Colonial through Contemporary); technology integration; curriculum (early childhood education with required school practica and student teaching, mathematics and science education); counseling, exceptional education and psychological studies; and educational leadership.

Spelman College offers a Bachelor of Arts Early Childhood Education and Education Studies and a Minor in Education Studies. Additionally, the Spelman Education Department offers preparation for Teacher Certification for Secondary Education (Grades 6-12) in for the following majors: Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Physics, and Political Science. The department also offers a Pre-K- 12 preparation for Teacher Certification in Spanish and Music.

Clark Atlanta University School of Education at CAU offers degrees as follows:

II. Guidelines for Collection Development

Language:

The primary language of materials in the collection is English.

Chronological Coverage:

Emphasis is placed on collecting teaching materials of current significance, preferably those published within the last ten years; however, select items of historical or research value may be retained.

Curricula Level and Subject Treatment:

Included in the collection: reading, language arts, spelling, handwriting, literature, music, science, health, mathematics, social studies, career education, special education, early childhood education, educational leadership, counseling and psychology, physical education, and child development. This is largely from the classical period to 21st century.

Geographical Coverage:

Emphasis is placed on educational methods and materials in the United States. Materials issued or published by state agencies and area school systems are also collected. Educational resources from other states and countries are selectively collected. Compliance with National and/or State academic and accrediting body standards is of utmost importance.

Scope

The resources for all education programs at Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University cover a vast range of materials. These resources (print and electronic) enable the user to engage in all aspects of exhaustive research from the general to the terminal.

III. Types of Materials & Formats Collected

The collection consists of print and electronic professional materials, monographs, serials, reference materials, curriculum guides, teaching aids, government documents, and standardized tests preparation (GACE). An excellent non-print collection is available to both faculty and students included are a large disciplinary collection videos and a select collection of sound recordings, microfiche, DVDs and CDs. Collection time frame will be within the last ten years. Interdisciplinary materials are also purchased especially in the content areas: e.g. STEM education.

Children and Juvenile Collection

The collection includes fiction and non-fiction, picture books, folk and fairy tales, plays and poetry appropriate for pre-k through 12. Collection of these books should include annual acquisition of award winners, honor books, and notable books such as Caldecott, Newberry and Coretta Scott King Award winners.

Media Materials and Equipment

Various material formats including emerging instructional technologies are collected to support pre-K through 12 courses of AUC educational studies programs. These may include: instructional games, multimedia kits, posters, pictures, globes, selected computer based instructional software, test instruments and miscellaneous instructional materials such as puppets, manipulatives, etc.

IV. Collection Strengths and Weaknesses

The collections for education are strongest in educational leadership, early childhood education and counselor education. Faculty members are encouraged and given opportunity to recommend books, journals and electronic databases. Students and faculty are able to select electronic books appropriate for Education through demand driven acquisition.

V. Standard Inclusions and Exclusions

RWWL does not buy course textbooks – print, electronic, or teacher’s editions. However, the subject librarian will work with teaching faculty and students to identify resources that meet the needs of their classes.

The Library acquires monographic works authored by the AUC faculty preferably through donation. This includes works in all media normally collected by the Library.
