Collection Development: Subject Profile

I. Program Supported

The physics collection at the Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the curricula of the degree programs in Pure and Applied Physics at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. Course offerings focus on the basic principles and concepts of physics including general physics, modern physics, chemical physics, mathematical physics, atmospheric science, biophysics, health physics, astronomical physics, nuclear and particle physics, solid state physics, mechanics, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics, thermodynamics, and for teaching in science and mathematics.

Degree(s) offered by Clark Atlanta University is/are:

  • Bachelor of Science, Physics
  • Bachelor of Science with a dual major in Physics and Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science / Master of Science, Physics [5-year accelerated program]

Degree(s) offered by Morehouse College is/are:

  • Bachelor of Science, Physics

Degree(s) offered by Spelman College

  • Bachelor of Science in Physics through one of these options: Advanced Theory and Experiment, Chemical Physics, Pre-Health, or Dual Degree Engineering
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts, Secondary Education

II. Guidelines for Collection Development

Languages

English, but may include translations of significant works. Foreign language materials may be obtained via the Woodruff Library Interlibrary Loan Service.

Chronological Coverage

No limits, emphasis on contemporary resources.

Geographical Coverage

The collection focuses primarily on information resources relevant to the study, teaching and research of pure and applied physics without regard to geographical origin.

Scope

The collection focuses primarily on the basic principles and concepts of pure and applied physics.

III. Types of Materials and Formats Collected

Scholarly journals, primary sources, scholarly secondary resources, and standard reference sources are collected. Electronic formats are preferred for all items added to the Library’s collection.

IV. Collection Strengths and Weaknesses

The collection provides strong coverage for basic principles and concepts of all sub-disciplines of physics. Special efforts are made to collect additional information resources to support undergraduate study and teaching in the areas of earth and atmospheric science. Proceedings and journal articles are available through online reference resources, as well as publisher online libraries and aggregator databases that the Library subscribes to. Faculty are given opportunity to request monograph works for purchase and addition to the collection.

V. Standard Inclusions and Exclusions

Textbooks are not normally purchased due to their likelihood of being superseded. If however a textbook is requested by a faculty member, the ebook format will be purchased. If no ebook format is available, then the print version will be purchased and then placed permanently in course reserves upon request by the departmental faculty.
