Collection Development: Subject Profile

I. Program Supported

The Engineering collection at the Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the curricula of the undergraduate Dual Degree Engineering programs at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. Students enroll in a core of pre-engineering courses that introduce basic principles and concepts relevant to the field of engineering including engineering graphics, electrical circuit analysis, engineering statics, engineering dynamics and engineering design.

II. Guidelines for Collection Development and Management

Languages

English, but may include translations of significant works. Foreign language materials may be obtained via the Woodruff Library Interlibrary Loan Service.

Chronological Coverage

No limits, though emphasis is placed on contemporary resources.

Geographical Coverage

The collection focuses primarily on information resources relevant to the study and teaching of engineering without regard to geographical origin.

Scope

The collection focuses primarily on the basic principles and concepts of engineering and related topics.

III. Types of Materials and Formats Collected

Scholarly journals, primary sources, scholarly secondary resources, and standard reference sources are collected. Electronic formats are preferred for all items added to the Library’s collection.

IV. Collection Strengths and Weaknesses

The monograph collection, online reference sources, and publisher and aggregator databases provide good coverage for basic principles and concepts related to engineering. Faculty are always given the opportunity to recommend items to support the curriculum.

V. Special Considerations

Faculty may request textbook titles for purchase. Because electronic format is preferred, any textbooks requested by faculty will be purchased in ebook form. Print textbook purchases will be considered on a case-by-case basis (i.e. whether a textbook is not available in ebook format). Print textbooks will be placed on permanent course reserves upon request by departmental faculty.
